Who should apply to BDEA?
Students who are overage for their grade, students who have considered dropping out or who have already dropped out, and students who are unsatisfied or unsuccessful in a traditional academic setting.
Which program is my student eligible for?
Students can pick either the 9 a.m. or the 10 a.m. start. The programs are exactly the same other than the starting hours.
Why should my students apply to BDEA instead of another school?
Students should apply to BDEA if they feel they can benefit from a competency-based, student-centered curriculum, smaller class size, and flexibility to work at their own pace.
Will any of their credits transfer?
Yes. Students who have received a C- or above as a final grade in traditional academic classes may be exempt from that class at BDEA. On the flip-side, if a student has failed a class but actually has strong skills in that subject, they may be able to test out of a class if they can demonstrate their mastery of that content area. We combine the student's transcript, placement assessments, and their performance during their first trimester here called "seminar" to determine what classes they will need to take at BDEA.
What if my student hasn't earned any credits? Can they still apply?
Absolutely! Many students applying to BDEA have zero credits but once they are here, they are able to work at their own pace to get the education they need and their high-school diploma.
Will BDEA accept students with IEPs?
Yes. It is important to let us know if the student has a current or an historical IEP so that we can be sure to put in place the supports they need during their first trimester at BDEA. Sometimes, students sign themselves off of IEPs prior to applying to BDEA and we miss the opportunity to give them a full compliment of support as soon as they enroll.
Will BDEA accept students who are English Language Learners?
Yes.
What kinds of social/emotional supports does BDEA offer?
BDEA offers a Student Support Team which includes five members, individual advisors, counselors, and a case worker from Youth Harbors for students with housing insecurity. BDEA is a trauma-sensitive school and works hard to maintain a supportive, safe, and nurturing whole-school climate and culture.
What kinds of extracurricular programming does BDEA have for students?
BDEA offers a variety of extracurricular activities through our Enrichment program.
I know BDEA is a competency-based school. How does that get included in a final transcript if this student applies to college?
Highly Competent=A, Competent=B, Basic Competence=C
When will my student graduate from BDEA?
Students coming to BDEA with few or no credits typically take 2-3 years to graduate, if they remain on-track and attend school regularly. Students are able to accelerate their path to graduation depending on their effort and attendance.
